Career Opportunities Law Students

As a boutique labour and employment law firm, we have been representing the interests of our clients in both official languages since 1987. Located in the heart of Ottawa’s Glebe neighbourhood, Emond Harnden is a progressive and exciting place to begin or enhance your career.

We are looking for other forward-thinkers to join our team!

While preserving all of the great aspects of its small firm origins, Emond Harnden has developed a “blue chip” clientele. Students looking to combine the benefits of articling at a boutique labour and employment law firm with the challenges and advantages of providing legal services to prestigious, high-profile clients should consider articling at Emond Harnden. With access to legal resources across multiple disciplines and areas of expertise, our firm provides articling students with the resources and training they will need to excel in the practice of law.

Students will also have the opportunity to do pro-bono or fee-reduced work for a variety of not-for-profit agencies in the Ottawa area. Participation in the many other varied activities through which the firm gives back to the community will add another important dimension to your articling experience at Emond Harnden

From Academics to Practicing Law: A Supportive and Structured Program

Exposing students to the many facets of labour and employment law, our structured articling program is a genuine apprenticeship. Students at Emond Harnden learn by doing. Students accompany lawyers to arbitrations, collective bargaining sessions, or labour board hearings. They may round out their experiences by drafting pleadings and delivering final arguments. But, of course, no articling term is complete without experiencing the joys of research and drafting memoranda.

Presenting recent developments, our in-house seminar series allows students to learn substantive law while discussing files and receiving practical advice from our lawyers. This collegial environment encourages articling students to graduate from the academics of law school to conducting files and managing client relationships.

Though guided by their principals and the chair of our articling committee, students may learn more from Emond Harnden’s open-door policy. Encouraged to seek mentoring from any of our lawyers, articling students will discover a wealth of practical information and immeasurable experience.

Being Hired Back

Emond Harnden has an excellent record of hiring its articling students into associate positions. More than one-third of the firm’s partners and associates articled at the firm. And, over the years, Emond Harnden has offered employment to nearly two-thirds of its articling students. Dedicated to developing talent from within, Emond Harnden sees its articling students as the foundation for future growth.

Working at Emond Harnden: Salary, Benefits, and the Office Environs

Our offices are located in the Glebe, a few minute’s drive from downtown Ottawa. Though the streetcars no longer stop along Bank Street, the restaurateurs, booksellers and coffee shop owners have maintained the feel of a cozy neighbourhood originally built around welcoming pedestrian traffic.

Our salaries and benefits are reviewed yearly, ensuring they are competitive with both the Toronto and Ottawa marketplaces. Emond Harnden offers the following:

  • The total annual salary paid to an articling student is $58,000 prorated over the articling period. Students are also paid a bonus of $6,000, $3,000 of which will be paid at the first pay period of the articling phase and the remaining $3,000 will be paid at its conclusion;
  • Full tuition for the Law Society of Ontario licensing process;
  • Paid parking or bus pass;
  • Three weeks of paid vacation (two weeks during the articling term and one week upon completion of articles);
  • A reimbursement of any wellness expense to a maximum of $500; and
