Breakfast Seminar – New Year, New Rules: Staying Compliant With Employment Law in 2025

Join Emond Harnden partners Sheri Farahani and Kyle Shimon for an informative and engaging in-person Breakfast Seminar about employment law updates in 2025 that will be of interest and importance to employers, including:

Tariff-related considerations for employers and available supports, including:

  • Potential measures and options short of lay-offs or terminations, including temporary tariff-related special measures under the Federal Work-Sharing Program;
  • The difference in the permissibility of temporary lay-offs under the Employment Standards Act, 2000 vs. the common law; and
  • Understanding and managing the employment law risks that may be associated with these various workforce measures.

 

A highlight of incoming amendments to Federal and Provincial legislation that will impact employers, including:

  • New leaves of absence and new requirements regarding publicly advertised job postings, under the Employment Standards Act, 2000; and
  • New leaves of absence and new prohibitions regarding the use of replacement workers during strikes and lockouts in federally regulated workplaces, under the Canada Labour Code

 

Case law updates addressing key employment law principles that should be top of mind for employers in 2025, including:

  • The enforceability of termination clauses in employment contracts;
  • The importance of trust in the employment relationship; and
  • Issues of capacity and duress in the context of an employee’s agreement to release their human rights claims.
